According to the American Diabetes Association, more than 500,000 adults in South Carolina have been diagnosed with diabetes an estimated 26,000 more will be diagnosed this year. This generous gift from the BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Foundation provides Healthier Generation further opportunity to act with purpose as we address the immediate health needs of children, families, and communities in South Carolina to build a healthier and happier tomorrow. The renewed funding announced today will continue to support Healthier Generation and DFSC's efforts to address shortcomings in diabetes care for people of color and other underserved demographic groups of South Carolinians.
This initial round of funding supported Healthier Generation's work in pursuit of three goals: to improve pregnancy outcomes in women with diabetes, to reduce lifelong risk of diabetes in children, and to prevent diabetes and its complications in adults. In 2020, the Foundation launched DFSC to reduce diabetes-related health disparities affecting African Americans, awarding a significant amount to several organizations, including Healthier Generation.
